RTO and RPO
Explain recovery time and recovery point expectations.
Plain-language explanation
RTO is the target time to restore service; RPO is the acceptable amount of data loss measured in time. Confusing the two produces bad backup plans because fast restoration and recent recovery points are different requirements.
How to apply it
- Use RTO when discussing downtime tolerance.
- Use RPO when discussing data-loss tolerance.
- Validate both with restore testing, not policy language alone.
Expected output
A plain-language reference note that helps users choose the right workflow, policy, or template.
Common failure mode
Mistaking existence of backups for proven recovery capability.
Use notes
| Use with | Link this note from workflows and policies where the term affects decisions. |
|---|---|
| Avoid | Do not turn definitions into rules unless a policy page owns the requirement. |
| Review point | Revise when repeated questions show the explanation is still ambiguous. |
